Dominican Republic Power & Water
Telecommunications
The telephone system in the Dominican Republic operates in a manner identical to the United States. The area code for the country is 809 so you can dial direct into the country using +1 dialing (+1-809-phone number). There are numerous locations throughout the country for international direct calling and faxing.
Access to the Internet is provided within the villa using either dial-up or direct connect DSL (called Flash). Both services are provided by Verizon/Codetel, the national telephone company. There is no additional charge for Internet access at the villa.
Electricity
American-style plugs are used throughout the country; power is 110-120 volts, 60 cycles. Unfortunately, fluctuations in the national electrical grid are common throughout the country; including brownouts and blackouts. Very sensitive electronic equipment should use surge protectors to prevent damage from these fluctuations. It is important to note that all of the important civil support systems (hospitals, police, etc.) have emergency backup generators.
To help address any concern you may have with electricity, the villa has installed an automatic 60Kw backup generator capable of providing more than enough power for the villa for an extended period of time. We have also installed solar panels in a location hidden from easy view to provide free, ecologically sensitive power for the villa. Soon we will be installing wind generators for the same purpose. All power in the villa, generated internally or obtained from the national power system, is included in your villa rental at no additional charge.
Water
NEVER DRINK WATER DIRECTLY FROM THE FAUCET unless it has been thoroughly boiled first. The water supply system in the Dominican Republic is not up to standards required for healthy, bacteria free water. Fresh, bottled drinking water is sold everywhere in the country.
The villa offers this bottled water free as part of your vacation package. Each room also has installed a purification system for the cleaning of water used to brush your teeth or rinse your mouth. These purification systems are some of the best available from North America and are designed for these types of water systems. Still, bottled water is always safest for drinking.
